Laundry Room Progress

Kristen has been working on getting things caulked, the nail holes filled and a first coat of paint on things. Because the wood on the wainscoting is a knotty pine we are putting on coat of a sealing primer before the trim paint. Here you can see some of the nail holes filled prior to sanding, priming and painting.

Here are the shelves removed and painted.

Here you can see some of the wainscoting with the first coat of paint on. We still need to get the joint compound up on the walls and the texture put on.

Next up is getting some wainscoting on the last wall. The first step is to cut out strips from the wall to create a nailing strip for the wainscoting. I used to cut things out like this with the utility knife, now I use a small circular saw with the depth set at 1/2", this makes a much cleaner and quicker cut.

 

Once the strip was removed it was replaced with 1/2" plywood that will act as the nailing surface for the smaller wainscoting panels. You can also see the first small piece of chair rail that is placed on the wall.

Here the baseboard and baseboard cap has been added as well as the wainscoting and chair rail on the last wall in the room.

Here is a view of the other end of the wall. The trim around the door has been started but there is still some work that needs to be done on the furnace side as well at the header at the top of the door. I will work to get the small trim pieces complete between the door trim and the wall before the weekend.

Laundry Room Wainscoting, Baseboard and Trim

We started working on one of the walls putting wainscoting up around the room. First, a section of the drywall had to be cut out and a board added to have something to nail the bead board to at the top and bottom.

Then the chair rail and baseboard were added. One side of the door trim had to be up to fit it to.

Then the slats were added.

The holes were filled. We still need to caulk and sand before priming. You can see the return on the chair rail against the door frame.

 

The wall to the right is next up, you can see that we have done the small section of chair rail, but that is it. We should get this wall done this week sometime after work.

 

Laundry Room Construction Started

First up was ripping up the linoleum floor and 3/4" plywood subfloor. This will allow the new floor of 1/2" Hardieboard and 1/4" tile to line up with the grade of the floor in the kitchen.

Next up is framing the walls around the hot water heater. You can also see in this picture the space that will be shelves.

Around the washer and dryer there is framing to support the table top that will go over them. We are still using the old butcher block that Kristen cleaned up that is standing vertical in the picture.

And around the furnace. This is the trickiest one to maintain the correct space from the unit in spots but to also frame in access panels for two sides and the filter.

The light switch was moved from its current location beside the door to a new box on the corner. And the first bit of drywall is put up.

The chair rail was then installed on the new unit along with the first bead board wainscoting.

The front panel on the furnace wainscoting is removable. You can see in this picture installing the wainscoting on the removable panel.

Here it is after all of the wainscoting is installed around the furnace area. You can also see in this picture the location of the 4 bolts that hold on the front panel.

There will be a door for access to the filter panel. This door will also allow access to a large and deep storage area.

Most of the drywall is up and the trim around the shelves is in so time to put on some mud.

We'll wait for it to dry give it a sanding and put on another coat tomorrow.

Baseboard and trim - downstairs almost complete

 We worked at painted up more trim pieces and putting together more baseboard, especially in the kitchen. All the downstairs trim was also painted after filling and sanding it.

 There is now no more baseboard left to complete in the entire downstairs! Did we mention yet that we agreed to be on the Historic Home Tour this year? It takes place in two weeks - not much time to finish and clean what we hope to.

Trim around window, under stairs, top of doors

We put some more of the trim up around many of the windows, doors and stairs. The first pictures show the trim that was placed along the bottom of the existing stair trim. We still need to come back in with some of the wall paint.

 

This trim took a little longer because it had to be machined to match the existing trim on the bottom of the windows. These pictures show the trim on the bottom of the new kitchen windows.

Some of the doors also needed some new trim added to their tops. This was milled on the table saw and router table to match the houses original trim.
