Painting up in the bathroom

We took a quick break from working on the stove unit to hang a painting up in the downstairs bathroom. It is a little hard to get a good view of the painting because the bathroom is too small for our camera to capture it when we are in there. The green thing in the tub is one of our plants (we were watering).

Ceiling of Range unit

The ceiling over the range unit is tiled while it is upside down on the bottom. The tile that we chose for this is a tavertine marble. It is much more difficult to cut then just the plan ceramic tile but the result came out well.

Here the unit is after it has been grouted. We chose a darker grout to make the tiles stand out a little more.

Countertops on the Range unit

The counter tops for both sides of the range unit had been rough cut to size but still required squaring of the edge, adding an edge profile and applying a finish. The first thing that we looked at were four different edge profiles. You can see in the following four pictures the profiles that we looked at.

We used these samples to look at four different finish colors. All of them are danish oil and are actually different. The colors are Natural, Fruitwood, Cherry and Mahogany. 

Here you can see some pictures of the two counter tops edged, oiled and installed. they are held in place with washerhead screws in slots on the underside.

Kitchen Update

Kristen got everything sanded up and painted. It looks real nice.

 

Building up the panels for the unit took most of the morning on Saturday. There are panels for the lower drawers, end of the bookcase and the "spice" drawer side. The first picture shows all of the pieces and the second shows them all glued up and put together. They all will need to be cut for an exact fit but we are getting closer.

Here is a picture of the bookcase panel installed. You can see that there is a small gap above and below the panel so that it matches the other side which is a drawer.

The back of the unit against the wall had to be scribed and cut prior to the final installation. Here you can see the finished product and the piece that was cut off to make it flush to the wall. You can see in the first picture the two ledger boards that the unit will attach to.

All of the lights and switches were hooked up in the unit. the top piece is still moving up and down for a while so the current connection is just through a couple wire nuts. There is a box that will end up housing all of the final connections for the lights and fan. In the first and second picture the lights are on. It is nice to have the dimmer on them so that we can adjust it down to low levels at night.

At the end of the day on Sunday we started work on the upper hood. It is planned to build the whole thing on the ground and move it up into place. Here you can see a couple of the ribs and the approximate place where it will go. We wanted to make sure that they design had plenty of room to one of the beams.

 Kristen picked up some cast iron hooks and spray painted them. They will be placed on the back of the door in the downstairs bathroom to hang towels. We had been looking for something like this for quite a while.

Working on the Cabinets

 Kristen and I worked some more on the middle unit of the stove cabinets. We first moved the whole thing up on top of the counter. You can see that Kristen has also put a first coat of paint on the inside of the cabinet. You can really start to see what it is going to look like. It is just resting on the two countertop sections. They still have to be taken out and finished and edged.

 

The front board was cut and put in place.

A shelf was built off the front board.

The top rail was put all the way around the top. The whole thing was created as one U shaped piece and placed on the top. You can also see that the brackets were added under the shelf. they don't actually carry any load so they are just screwed in place.

You can see what the side looks like with the top cap in place.

A piece of crown molding is then added that goes up to the shelf.

Here is Kristen doing a great job filling in all of the nail holes that I put in.

We also started on the ceiling for the inside of the unit. You can see the large opening that is where the vent will attach. I will also need to place 4 lights up here for the range surface.

Sheet plywood was added to it and the hole was marked to cut out.

Here it is with the hole cut out. You can see we get some nice sunshine coming though on Sunday mornings.

This is what it looks like with the ceiling just resting in place. We are still having a hard time figuring out what tile we are going to use in this surround....

This is what it looks like from a distance. We will start working on the top hood either this week or next weekend. As you can see we also need to start thinking about building the cabinet fronts and drawers.
