Kristen and I are planning on stripping the paint from all of the stair treads as well as from the hand rail and the newel posts on the stairs. We began this process over the weekend using an orange oil based (non-toxic) paint stripper. It seemed to work well but it is going to take a while to get all of the paint removed to the point where we want to apply polyurethane. Here are some before and after pictures of some of the handrail stripping.
This is going to look very nice.... but sounds a little like you two are gluttons for punishment ;). Hopefully it's just this one set of stairs!
